Callenberg's dictionary is an important work of early Yiddish scholarship which was scanned and put online by Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main: http:// sammlungen.ub.uni-frankfurt.de/judaicaffm/content/titleinfo/3858057 I have uploaded it here in order to perform OCR on the Yiddish text. The full title reads: Jüdischteutsches Wörterbuchlein welches meistens aus den bey dem Jüdischen Instituto edirten Schriften colligirt und dem Gebrauch derer welche solche Schriften verstehen lernen...

An inquiry about the pronunciation of /r/ in Yiddish dialects has led to a puzzle. It is well known that there are two main places of articulation for the Yiddish /r/: the tip of the tongue (apical) and the back of the mouth (uvular). In the languages of Europe, the apical pronunciation is much more common and the uvular one may be a relatively recent innovation (spreading from French?) But in Yiddish, the uvular /R/ seems to be slightly more common, even in regions where the co-territorial...

The word kharpe חרפּה 'disgrace' is best known in the phrase a kharpe un a bushe 'a shame and a disgrace,' and for some locations it is only given in that phrase. But Stutchkoff brings some other useful expressions: ufdekn di kharpe 'expose the disgrace,' a kharpe iz tsu ganvenen 'it's disgraceful to steal,' ganvenen iz a gresere kharpe vi opgebn 'it is more shameful to steal than to give back, ' avekleygn di kharpe in a zayt 'put aside one's shame,' er nemt zayn kharpe un dekt dermit tsu...

A map of the word orl ערל 'non-Jew' based on the LCAAJ data. This map has two significant improvements over the previous ones. First, this is made with the new base map which has almost all of the location names added so that one can more easily identify where Jews said what. Second, I've left only the borders of the major dialects in color, the rest is colorless — so as not to interfere with the colors of the dots. (In the previous maps, a yellow dot in the blue Northeastern area would...

Some video snippets by Janina Wurbs of the noted modernist Yiddish writer Jeremiah Hescheles on August 14, 2010, at age a hundred (and about two months before his death on October 16). Also present were Itzik Gottesman, Lilian Tuerk, and Leyzer Burko. Hescheles had worked on the Groyser verterbukh and on this occasion noted that one bone of contention between Stutchkoff and the main editor, Yudel Mark, was Stutchkoff's Polish Yiddish dialect and his mistakes, which Mark corrected without the...

Although the word goy גוי 'Gentile' is sometimes thought to be pejorative, it was the normal word among East European Jews, milder than alternatives like orl ערל, sheygets שייגעץ, shkots שקאָץ, poyer פּויער, sēge (Western Yiddish), and about as polite as krist קריסט or nokhri נוכרי. Probably there are whole dissertations written on this word, or at least there should be. But the Yiddish dialect information available in our dictionaries and in the published...

The gender of oyg 'eye' is neuter in 48.4% of locations, feminine in 34.5%, and masculine in 15.2%. In about 2% of locations, the gender appears to be mixed. The gender in most dictionaries is only neuter, although Katz gives both neuter and masculine. But nobody gives the feminine its due! As expected, the historical neuter is maintained in most of Southern Yiddish, while Litvaks switch to another gender. It is curious that the masculine forms seem to cluster along the borde r with the neuter...
